About the Role

Provides strategic direction and leadership for African programs that support innovative sexual and reproductive health advocacy and service delivery, including safe abortion and LGBTQ rights. Manages regional programs, personnel, budgets, and operations in Africa. Oversees regional strategies, partnerships, and technical support to achieve program goals. Identifies new partnerships and collaborations, including resource partners for the Africa Program and PPG broadly.

Directs regionally-based fundraising activities. Monitors and provides technical assistance to partners through supervision of support to regional staff, interns, and consultants. As a member of PP Global’s leadership team, the Global Leadership Team (GLT) contributes to developing PP Global’s plans, programs, communications, and policies. Collaborates with teams across and within the PPFA organization as needed. Participates in international and regional forums and seeks to build effective coalitions and partnerships to accomplish PP Global’s long-term goals. Represents PPFA across Africa and in international settings.

Delivery:

  • Leads regional staff in creating and managing programs in service delivery and advocacy designed to accomplish PP Global’s strategic objectives. Identifies and oversees regional program strategies, partnerships, and technical support to achieve program goals. Develops regional and country strategic plans and annual work plans.
  • Collaborates deeply with and across the Latin America, Global Connect, and Global Operations teams to help drive the impact of Planned Parenthood Global Writ large.
  • Manages regional budgets, ensuring programmatic and financial accountability and compliance with PPFA and donor requirements.
  • Directs region-based fundraising and supports broad PPG development activities; assists with fundraising and related relationship-building through developing and maintaining contacts with international NGOs, government agencies, existing/potential donors and foundations, and professional colleagues in the region of assignment. Collaborates with the National Office on proposal development and reporting for all major grants and regional projects.
  • Recruits, hires, and supervises regional staff/consultants; conducts performance reviews; coaches and mentor’s regional staff; oversees staff training and development; identifies needed skills and expertise; fosters regional teamwork and inclusive work environment. Coaches, mentors, and supports team members, helping to develop their skills and providing opportunities to grow in their careers.
  • Contributes, as part of PP Global’s management team, the GLT, to developing plans, systems and processes for program planning, evaluation, technical assistance, documentation and dissemination, and definition of program models, theory of change and frameworks. Participates in all relevant planning activities and meetings for PPFA and PP Global.
  • Prepares and reviews information for use in PPFA, PP Global, and regional media and communications and participates in developing regional communication strategies. Represents PPFA and PP Global in the region and globally on SRHR and/or Africa issues.
  • Develops and maintains contacts at the region’s leadership level, including with government officials, international agencies, regional bodies, NGOs, and donors. Makes presentations and participates in strategic planning on the region’s reproductive health and rights issues. Participates on behalf of PPFA in regional networks and coalitions to advocate for reproductive health services and rights. If needed, collaborate or lead others to develop networks, partnerships and coalitions to build momentum toward our goals.
  • Completes special projects and initiatives as opportune/assigned, including:

*Play a leadership role on behalf of PP Global in building valuable relationships with the PPFA family, including national conferences, leadership council and other development resources, the US public policy team, special initiatives and affiliates. Coordinate these efforts with the national office staff and facilitate connections among divisional staff and PPFA resources. Help assess appropriate levels of regional resources and effort to commit.

*Contribute to the orientation of new PP Global employees, especially those outside of the regional staff, to ensure the conveyance of institutional history and in-depth understanding of the way in which PP Global works, as well as its theoretical and practical models and methods.

Engagement:

The incumbent regularly works with managers in other departments, regional offices, and divisions

to integrate work activities and products to meet assigned departmental/divisional goals.

Develops and maintains a network of professional contacts with other NGOs, governments, donors and colleagues to advance the image and the operational well-being of the department and PPFA. Seeks new contacts to expand PPFA’s presence in the region. Serves on the PP Global Leadership Team and contributes to the overall culture, vision, and strategy of PP Global. Supervises a senior team of directors and consultants assigned to the Africa region. Directly supervises, motivates, evaluates, recruits and develops staff responsible for all related personnel actions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in development, public health, and/or sexual and reproductive health programming in or relating to the region of assignment. At least eight years of management experience, including project and fiscal management, people supervision, and budgeting.
  • Experience of having expanded and cultivated donor relationships over time.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated thought leadership around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues, especially in the region of assignment and from an Africa-centric point of view.
  • Strong commitment to innovation, deep curiosity and creativity, and demonstrated skills in adaptive management.
  • Knowledge of personnel management and organizational development to lead a large team.
  • Strong writing, editing, analytical, negotiation, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven skills in fundraising, research and data analysis, proposal development, strategic planning and management.
  • Experience with developing, administering and overseeing budgets.
  • Familiarity with implementing trust-based and/or feminist grant making.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a dynamic, fast-moving team, completing multiple tasks with poise, accuracy, and confidence.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to quickly changing priorities and ambiguous situations.
  • Commitment to Planned Parenthood’s mission and diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly surrounding race equity.

Languages

  • Facilitation and presentation skills with fluency in English and French preferred.

Terms of Appointment

It is a permanent contract.

Role Location

The role location will be flexible from Regional Offices in Nairobi Kenya / or PPFA offices in Africa.

Travel: 30%-40% time travel is required, both within the African region and to the US.
