Introduction
Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is a feminist, pan-African Rapid Response Fund committed to promoting African feminist principles and supporting womn human rights defenders (AWHRDs). With an unwavering dedication to transforming power dynamics, UAF-Africa prioritizes the advancement of womn’s agency in areas like peacebuilding, political participation, socio-economic empowerment, and natural resource governance.
Operating as a virtual organization registered in Kenya and Zimbabwe, UAF-Africa extends its physical reach across East, West, North, and Southern Africa, including key locations such as Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Harare, Abuja, and Johannesburg. By mobilizing resources from local and international funders, UAF-Africa ensures prompt and impactful interventions through its Rapid Response Grantmaking mechanism, enabling womn human rights defenders to navigate urgent challenges effectively.
Joining UAF-Africa as a Programme Intern offers a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing feminist values, supporting womn human rights defenders, and fostering transformative social impact across the continent. This is an on-site internship based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Key Responsibilities
As the Programme Intern under the Sustaining Defenders Portfolio, you will play an integral role in supporting grantmaking, data management, outreach, and administrative tasks. Your main duties include:
1. Grantmaking and Partner Communication
- Acknowledge, populate, and assign grant requests received by the Fund.
- Respond to grant-related inquiries in consultation with the supervisor and the Sustaining Defenders Portfolio team.
- Communicate decisions on reviewed grants, including notifying applicants of declined grants.
- Serve as the initial contact for grantee partners, providing prompt and suitable communication.
2. Administrative Support
- Organize due diligence and capacity-strengthening meetings with grantee partners.
- Assist with logistics for events such as convenings, webinars, and outreach missions.
- Perform data entry and maintain grant-related records within the grantmaking database.
- Support the Sustaining Defenders Programme Manager in organizing portfolio meetings.
3. Research and Reporting
- Conduct research to support outreach missions and events.
- Document key contextual issues relevant to the Sustaining Defenders Portfolio.
- Develop periodic reports and provide thematic data analysis and trends insights.
4. Language Translation
- Where applicable, provide language translation for grant requests and communication materials to support UAF-Africa’s multilingual operations.
5. Miscellaneous
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
Academic Qualifications
- A Degree in Social Sciences, Women’s Studies, Political Science, International Development, Law, or a related field.
Skills and Experience
- At least 2 years of project management experience providing administrative, analytical, and technical support.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in French is an advantage.
- Demonstrated commitment to feminist principles and womn’s rights issues in Africa.
- Familiarity with feminist movement-building and political analysis.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with integrity and confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a diverse team.
- Experience working in a virtual environment is an added advantage.
