Mass Recruitment-GoK Jobs (30,000 Youths for Climate WorX) -Nairobi

The government has announced a significant expansion of the Climate WorX project, increasing the number of workers from 20,000 to 50,000. This initiative aims to provide employment opportunities for more Kenyan youths while accelerating environmental conservation efforts.

During the launch of the Ngong River Clean-up initiative in Mukuru kwa Reuben, Embakasi East Constituency, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed that the additional workforce would expedite the restoration of the Mathare, Nairobi, and Ngong Rivers.

He conveyed that the project involves waste removal, rehabilitating degraded riverbanks, and planting trees along waterways. In addition to the workforce expansion, the government is also considering a review of the daily stipend, currently set at Ksh500.

The first phase of the Climate WorX project was initiated by President William Ruto in September 2024, engaging 20,000 youths in employment while transforming the Nairobi River Basin into an economic and recreational ecosystem.

At the same event, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that within a month, the government would review and address concerns regarding the stipend and workforce expansion. He assured that necessary plans would be put in place to resolve these issues.

Environmental Conservation

The effort to restore the Mathare, Nairobi, and Ngong Rivers is part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s broader environmental conservation strategy. This initiative also aims to generate green jobs for Kenyans.

Murkomen emphasized that the government envisions Nairobi following the example of cities such as Paris, London, and Washington, which maintain clean rivers flowing through urban areas.

Additionally, the government is planning to extend the Climate WorX program beyond Nairobi to other major cities, including Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, and other towns.

In a related development, the Interior CS announced plans to increase the number of Nairobi’s sub-counties from 11 to 17. This restructuring aims to enhance service delivery and ensure equitable distribution of employment and other opportunities.

The government’s decision aligns with its commitment to improving governance and infrastructure in the capital city.
