Director of Science & Technology
Job Summary/ Purpose
The Director of Science & Technology is a key member of the Orbia Ventures team, ensuring that both strategic choices on investment focus areas, as well as deal-specific decision making is supported by solid science-based assessment and argumentation.
Main Responsibilities
- Research – Develop investment theses and points of view on technology trends relevant to Orbia Ventures
- Ecosystem building – Develop and maintain a network with like-minded VCs / CVCs and represent Orbia to generate high-quality deal flow.
- Sourcing – Identify and screen potential investment opportunities.
- Due diligence – Conduct technical due diligence, leveraging experts within Orbia and externally, create investment memos and present opportunities to Orbia Ventures’ investment committee.
Knowledge/ Experience Required and Minimum Qualifications
- Academic Level: PhD in natural science or engineering
- Minimum 10 years of work experience in innovation, VC, corporate fund, corporate development, or startup
Ability to demonstrate:
- Critical thinking, going deep on first principles and interact with experts from a wide range of scientific domains.
- Synthesizing complexity into clear arguments
- Evaluation of techno-economic analyses
- Strong thesis development and articulation
- Intellectual curiosity about venture capital, corporate innovation, and startups
- Proactive mindset: constantly seeking new approaches/improvements to processes and methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (other language a plus)
- Strong networking skills with entrepreneurs, investors, corporate executives, etc.
- Exemplary follow-through with minimal supervision
