Job description

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to help maintain, optimize, and evolve our fully decentralized edge infrastructure. Our future infrastructure will span thousands of edge gateways, all running a highly-customized stack including K3s, CoreDNS, WireGuard, Cilium, PARSEC, Fluent Bit, and more — all designed to support decentralized application deployment, offline autonomy, and secure communication across nodes.

You will be responsible for ensuring reliability, security, observability, and automation across our infrastructure while working closely with our engineering team to support new deployments, updates, and enhancements. This is a hands-on technical role requiring deep expertise in Kubernetes at the Edge, Infrastructure-as-Code, Service Discovery, Security, and Observability.

Responsibilities

✅ Manage and maintain K3s clusters running on BalenaOS-powered edge devices.

✅ Configure and optimize CoreDNS for dynamic service discovery across edge nodes.

✅ Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform to automate deployment and management of the infrastructure across thousands of devices.

✅ Configure and maintain Cilium for service mesh and secure inter-service communication.

✅ Maintain and monitor WireGuard VPN for secure node-to-node communication.

✅ Implement and enforce mTLS for service-to-service security.

✅ Manage PARSEC for secure key management and integration with TEE hardware security.

✅ Manage Fluent Bit + Fluentd for log collection, forwarding, and analysis.

✅ Integrate and fine-tune Prometheus for full system and application observability.

✅ Collaborate with development teams to automate application deployment pipelines using ArgoCD (GitOps).

✅ Establish disaster recovery, backup, and failover processes for edge devices.

✅ Document processes, configurations, and procedures for future scalability and onboarding.Required Skills and Experience

✅ Strong experience managing K3s (lightweight Kubernetes) in production environments.

✅ Expert in service discovery (CoreDNS) — especially within Kubernetes and across distributed edge networks.

✅ Hands-on experience with Terraform to manage edge device provisioning and cluster configuration.

✅ Proficient in Cilium (for networking and service mesh), including eBPF understanding.

✅ Deep knowledge of WireGuard VPN for secure node-to-node tunneling.

✅ Experience configuring and enforcing mTLS between Kubernetes services.

✅ Experience with PARSEC for key management, including working with TEE/TrustZone on ARM hardware.

✅ Skilled in log collection and observability using Fluent Bit, Fluentd, and Prometheus.

✅ Strong background in securing edge infrastructure (secure boot, mutual authentication, certificate rotation).

✅ Ability to automate CI/CD workflows with ArgoCD and GitOps.

✅ Familiarity with distributed storage (Rook + MicroCeph) is a plus (for future phases).

✅ Proficiency in Bash scripting, Python, and Go for automation tasks.

✅ Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

➕ Basic knowledge on embedded Linux environments.

➕ Understanding of capturing network metrics with OpenNDS and dnsmasq.

➕ Experience managing Edge-to-Edge Service Discovery (mDNS, CoreDNS SRV records, etc.).

➕ Familiarity with AI/ML workload deployment at the edge is a bonus.
