Introduction

Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is a feminist, pan-African Rapid Response Fund dedicated to transforming power relations by resourcing African feminists and women human rights defenders (AWHRDs) and their initiatives. UAF-Africa operates as a virtual organization with a strategic physical presence across multiple countries, including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and many others.

UAF-Africa champions feminist and women’s rights movements, providing rapid funding for unanticipated, time-sensitive, and innovative initiatives. These initiatives aim to advance women’s peace participation, social and economic empowerment, and natural resource governance. This vital support enables women human rights defenders to sustain their efforts before, during, and after urgent situations.

Key Responsibilities

As a Programme Associate for Civic Engagement, GBV & SRHRJ, you will play an essential role in advancing women’s human rights and social justice. Below is a detailed breakdown of your responsibilities:

Grants Management

  • Collaborate with the Sustaining Defenders team to achieve or exceed annual grant targets.
  • Prepare or review grant proposal write-ups and provide recommendations to Programme Officers.
  • Consult formal and informal advisors to gather insights on grant proposals.
  • Liaise with the Finance team to ensure efficient fund disbursements.
  • Maintain regular communication with grantees, ensuring timely submission of necessary paperwork.
  • Manage the grants database, ensuring Salesforce is updated with reporting details.
  • Produce analytical reports on grant activities focusing on Sustaining AWHRDs, Civic Engagement, GBV & SRHRJ.
  • Provide timely responses to queries from grant matrices, emphasizing transparency and accountability.

Programme Support

  • Assist in the implementation of donor-specific obligations and portfolio goals.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to align on priorities.
  • Provide updates on applications, awarded grants, and disbursed funds.
  • Plan outreach missions to connect with potential grantees and stakeholders.
  • Organize and maintain comprehensive grant files for easy retrieval.

Outreach and Advocacy

  • Coordinate outreach missions and events, such as webinars and convenings.
  • Draft articles, grantee stories, and blogs to highlight the impact of funded initiatives.
  • Actively represent UAF-Africa’s work at meetings and other forums.

Programme Logistics

  • Prepare budgets for outreach missions and networking events.
  • Support administrative planning for programme events.
  • Assist in onboarding new team members to familiarize them with grant-making processes.

Financial Oversight

  • Facilitate financial support for grantees, ensuring funds are used effectively.
  • Perform due diligence during the grant-making process.
  • Monitor grant closeouts to ensure efficient turnaround times.

Qualifications and Skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Women’s Rights, Gender Studies, Law, Social Sciences, Humanities, or related fields.

Experience

  • 4-6 years of overall experience, with at least 1-3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Proven understanding of feminist and women’s human rights issues in Africa.
  • Experience working in a virtual environment is an added advantage.

Skills

  • Integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English (French is an added advantage).
  • Strong organizational and administrative capabilities.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar database management tools.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize, and present information effectively.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel within Africa and internationally as needed.
