Since the 1990s, the URUS Global Development department has applied knowledge, expertise, and technology to addressing livestock challenges in emerging economies while developing markets for our products and services. Through Global Development, URUS and GENEX are working in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, other funding organizations and partners to support farmers and cooperatives in emerging countries in their quest to become profitable and sustainable. Since 2010, GENEX through the Global Development department has been implementing the Cooperative Development Program (CDP), funded by USAID. Our current CDP will work in Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda to build the technical, organizational, and business capacities of cattle producer cooperatives; improve access to climate-smart products and services that cooperative members need to increase productivity and profitability; and contribute to the evidence base on the role of cooperatives as catalysts for systemic change, all resulting in stronger cooperatives, improved livestock systems, reduced methane emissions, and shared learning opportunities.

About the Role:

We have an immediate job opening for a Chief of Party to lead our CDP project in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. Former USAID award management experience, strong leadership, good people skills, creativity, adaptability, good communication, appreciation of other cultures, organizational and delegation are qualifications and skills that we seek in applicants for this position, along with a passion for agriculture.

The Chief of Party will drive the successful implementation of GENEX’s USAID-funded CDP and will be responsible for achieving the program goals while ensuring compliance of the award. As the program lead, you will be responsible for managing personnel and consultants, organizing activities and events, communicating with donors, local cooperatives, and stakeholders, achieving annual and multiannual goals and reporting to internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the Chief of Party will assist with making connections and leveraging learning from international cooperative development activities to domestic private sector-led activities.

Major Areas of Accountability:

  • Maintaining compliance of the responsibilities and terms of the CDP cooperative agreement with USAID.
  • Managing and motivating personnel and consultants, organizing activities and events, communicating with donors, cooperatives, stakeholders, partners and reporting to URUS.
  • Develop, communicate clearly and oversee annual and multi-annual programmatic and financial reporting, work plans, environmental mitigation, financial management, monitoring and evaluation and be directly responsible for their implementation and achievement of intended targets.
  • Oversee performance of country and regional managers, trainers, consultants and other persons contracted under the project.
  • Ensure that appropriate administrative and logistical structures and procedures are in place and maintained in accordance with the company and donor guidelines, policies, and requirements.
  • Oversee coordination of data collection and related activities; manage and interpret data; plan and implement research. Write and disseminate development reports, research documents etc. to internal and external audiences.
  • Integrate and coordinate the CDP project with other URUS Global Development activities, providing updates, success stories, etc. Strategically partner with the entire URUS organization to support the company mission and goals.
  • Maintain strict programmatic and financial records and reporting to URUS and GENEX finance, ensuring that the program is implemented within budget and in compliance with USAID rules and regulations.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience managing USAID-funded award, preferably in a leadership position
  • Bachelor’s degree in international development or related agricultural field.
  • Experience and proven results in program management and agribusiness.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • High accuracy and attention to details.
  • Ability to work well independently with limited supervision and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and skills.
  • A self-starter with an ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Experience working with cooperatives is a plus

Location and other Job Requirements:

  • This position will be based out of the GENEX CDP office in Kenya and the employment contract will be with URUS Genetics Ltd. Kenya. Authorized to work in the East Africa Community (EAC) is a must. Preference will be given to candidates based in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • This position will require extensive travel and the ability to meet such travel requirements is a must.
