Introduction

Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya (BNBR) is a nationally recognized non-governmental organization that has been at the forefront of promoting mental health since 2005. Our mission is to enhance the clinical, economic, and social well-being of individuals and communities, fostering resilience and promoting a society where mental health is a valued priority.

In alignment with this mission, BNBR implements the Youth First Kenya (YFK) program, a school-based initiative designed to nurture social-emotional learning and resilience among adolescents. This teacher-facilitated program improves social, emotional, and mental well-being, alongside academic performance, for secondary school learners.

BNBR is seeking 20 National Volunteers to support the effective implementation of the YFK program in various counties across Kenya.


Key Responsibilities of the National Volunteers

As a National Volunteer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the YFK initiative. Your duties will include:

1. Session Shadowing and Supervision

  • Develop and maintain a detailed supervision schedule for the schools assigned to you.
  • Attend weekly YFK sessions conducted by facilitators within your designated schools.
  • Observe and shadow YFK facilitators during their sessions to ensure adherence to program requirements.
  • Provide constructive feedback and actionable guidance to facilitators to enhance their delivery.
  • Motivate facilitators to align with the YFK curriculum, objectives, and methodologies.

2. Real-time Reporting

  • Provide regular progress reports to the YFK Project Officer stationed in your county.
  • Document observations, challenges, and suggestions during the implementation of YFK sessions.
  • Offer real-time updates during key data collection phases, such as baseline, daily implementation, and endline evaluations.

3. Data Collection

  • Collect data from schools implementing the YFK program within your assigned sub-county.
  • Ensure data is accurate, timely, and compliant with the established monitoring and evaluation framework.
  • Collaborate with the YFK Project Officer to develop data collection tools and protocols.
  • Submit compiled data to the YFK Project Officer for further analysis.

4. Support and Coordination

  • Provide necessary support to schools and facilitators to address challenges during program implementation.
  • Facilitate smooth communication and coordination between all stakeholders.
  • Participate in regular meetings and consultations with the YFK team to share insights and updates.

The program will operate in multiple counties. Each county will have designated sub-counties, with one volunteer assigned to each sub-county.

Qualifications and Skills

To qualify for this role, you should possess the following:

Mandatory Qualifications

  • A minimum of post-basic education (certificate level).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and reporting abilities.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to program requirements.
  • Basic computer literacy skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in program implementation, data collection, or educational facilitation is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with the education system in Kenya.
  • Ability to move freely across project sites using public transport.

Engagement Period

The engagement will run for 7 months, from 1st January 2025 to 31st July 2025.


Stipend Information

Volunteers will receive a reasonable stipend and reimbursement for travel expenses. Specific details will be discussed and agreed upon during the selection process.
